Currently, roller derby leagues tend to play amongst their own house teams, on a more recreational basis. Regional and national play are becoming increasingly organized, with Nationals taking place in the US each November. Playing on a more competitive level is evolving for leagues, and thus the concept of a Travel Team.
The Travel Team represents the highest skilled players amongst those that are able to travel to play other leagues.
Comprised of skaters from throughout the league, the Kannibelles team provides those
who want to compete at regional and national levels the opportunity to do so—
following the organization of traditionally tiered sport divisions.
Noting the obvious skill of the WKWRDL in 2011, Training Director Beretta Lynch
organized a Travel Team of enthusiastic skaters. First practicing once, then twice,
per week in addition to their house team obligations, the Belles finished their season
with a 4 / 1 record. They were also invited to compete in the first ever Western
Regional tournament, finishing an unprecedented 5th place. The organizers were
so impressed with the tournament’s “dark horse,” they asked WKWRDL to host the
regional tournament in 2012, noting the Belles particularly obvious athleticism and
sportswomanship.
In 2009, rollergirl.ca developed national rankings of house and travel teams. The Belles
debuted impressively on the rollergirl.ca national rankings at #6.
To improve upon our potential in the 2012 season, skaters will be chosen by quarterly
tryouts to play one game per month in addition to tournaments. They will have the
option of playing solely for the Kannibelles, thereby allowing them to focus on one
nationally competitive team.
