Perhaps you’ve said to yourself, “Aw, roller derby looks like so much fun! I just love the short shorts and cute socks!”
The Killjoys will show you what it’s really about.
Since
October 2010
Origins
Founded by Amanda Harris Sawatzky in the fall of 2010. Without her hardworking, dedication & organizational skills Nelson would have no roller derby. Over 40 women were in Nelson original fresh meat pool so the decision was made to split us into two teams. Killjoys & LumberJackies. By the end of the 2011 season 7 founding killjoys remain.
Strengths
We are a positive. We never give up. We push & encourage each other. We work hard to be a cohesive team where our senior members foster our newer members. We are active in our community. The Killjoys have sponsored a Nelson Leafs hockey player for the 2011/12 season.
Weaknesses
Low skater retention (derby a tough sport – not for the faint of heart). Derby also is a
huge time commitment which can make it challenging for those not willing to give up a
huge chunk of their spare time.
How was your 2011 season
After an initial loss to the Lumber Jackies (by 6 points) and subsequently coming in second to every team we played all season we finished off our season with our first win!!!
Skating with 10 players, 2 of whom had never skated in a bout before. It showed how
hard we had been training & how much we had learned.
Vision for the future
To continue to give back to our community through fundraisers & sponsorships. To
lead by example. To thrive as teammates, leaguemates & community mates and
continue our excellent relationships with those around us. To be the best we can be!!
