Gnarlie’s Angels

Gnarlie's Angels - Rossland , BC

Charlie’s errant younger brother wasn’t a nice man. These are his angels.

Origins
Gnarlie’s Angels began as a drop-in recreational program offered by the recreation  department in Rossland, BC. The arena, otherwise vacant, was used as a spot to lace up used, rental vintage skates (obtained from the Nelson Youth Center) and sport thrift store safety gear to learn the basics of Roller Skating safely. With the help of Shelly Grice and Bobbi Barbarich, the Angels learned the basic skills and strategies of roller derby. As the Angels learned derby at the same pace, they became an unlikely tight-knit group of friends, celebrating in one another’s successes. After the first Annual Mountain Mayhem in September of 2010, the Gnarlie’s Angels grew even more, welcoming additional ‘derby family’ members that are enthusiastic, athletic, like-minded women and even a few very patient men (Damon Walton and Phil Loosely) to be our coaches. Gnarlie’s Angels have enjoyed 2 road trips this season, playing with teams from other leagues and finished their official inaugural season of 2011 undefeated amongst the West Kootenay Women’s Roller Derby League.

Strengths
Excellent team spirit and camaraderie. Love of the game, love of each other and our coaches.

Weaknesses
We are all strong-willed ladies. And penalties.

How was your 2011 season:
Outstanding. Unforgettable.

Vision for the future:
Continue growing in game awareness and play. We hope that each player will be confident in playing each position and that we are all very aware of the rules and referee calls. Just keep rolling.

Since
May 2010
